IrFanView does all these things with a tiny program (version 4.23 is only 1,28 MegaBytes) that uses little resources and is totally free. Let’s look into the list of file formats this freeware program supports:

As you can see there are a lot of formats that you can open with this program, although you can’t edit them and save them in the same format. This makes it a great program to convert some of the more exotic fileformats for use on the web. Another nifty feature of IrFanView is that you can create your own screensavers with it, based on pictures you like. It can also read the EXIF-data from the pictures you made with your digital camera.

To complete the package there are quite some plug-ins that add a lot of nice little features.

Guess what? Notepad++ supports them all with correct syntax highlighting. Parts of this site have been made with Notepad++ as well.

Other great features:

- work in multiple documents at once, side by side.
- set your own syntaxcolors
- print and keep the colored syntax

All this and it still manages to be free, open source and under 3 megabytes. Get your free version of this great source code editor now!

I can personally recommend this piece of software for being light weight and doing all the basic stuff you will need. If you’re building a really big project I wouldn’t recommend it, but for building your personal project it’s perfect. Every webdeveloper should have a copy on a memorystick or installed on their own computer!
The only negative thing about it is that it’s only available for Windows. I’m sorry penguins, devils and apples…

These torrents are using the peer-to-peer file sharing protocol called BitTorrent and it enables you to download files from people all over the world that are sharing that file or even just a part of it. You begin by searching for the file(s) that you would like to download, usually on a torrentsite, and then you download are really small file called a torrent. This torrent is then loaded in a torrentclient which reads this file and starts downloading the file you wanted in the first place.

There are a lot of clients out there, but there is one that has everything you want:

small

free

fast

easy to use

packed with options

This client is called µTorrent (often pronounced as uTorrent or youTorrent). It’s current version is 1.8.1 and you can find it after the jump!

Download µtorrent 1.8.1 now!

(only 263 kb!)

After you’ve downloaded and installed µTorrent we do have a few tips for you to optimize your experience:

Forward the bittorrent ports correctly from your router to your pc.There is a good site called portforward.com that can help you with this.

Make sure your upload speed isn’t set to the maximum upload speed of your connection, because it will seriously affect your normal surfing speed.

Share your file after you’re done downloading so others can keep on making use of your connection just as you used theirs.

Enjoy your downloads!
